E-Course: Design and Dementia

Making the Environment Easier to Understand

For those experiencing dementia, changes in cognitive abilities such as loss of memory, language skills, problem-solving ability, and judgment can make living and feeling at home a real challenge.

We adjust the environment for those with a physical disability, but we don’t always think to make adjustments for those with a cognitive disability.

And the environment becomes much more important to a person with cognitive impairment as it can help them compensate for their cognitive losses.  A well designed environment can promote way finding, safety, continence, pleasure and increased independence.

This presentation will focus on some common dementia issues and easy changes which may help those living with dementia to maximize their potential and create a better fit between the person’s present abilities and the home environment’s demands.
